About TMTC

Our Company, Tavistock Musical Theatre Company, was founded in 1954 as the result of a meeting that was held to re-establish an operatic society, after the demise before the Second World War, of Tavistock Amateur Operatic Society. The Mikado was chosen for their first show and was performed in Tavistock Town Hall the following year, the rest they say is history…

The Country Girl - 1960

Since then, the company has presented over 60 major musicals, together with countless concerts, plays and revues. All the early shows played to packed houses in the Town Hall attracting long queues for tickets when the box office opened. With the opening of the Wharf Theatre in Tavistock, the company again played to capacity audiences and received critical acclaim.

Margaret Crook and Pat Mildren

Many musicals and shows have been presented over the years, starting with The Mikado in 1955, Oklahoma, Brigadoon, Stepping Out, South Pacific, Calamity Jane, ‘Allo ‘Allo, Anything Goes, Sweet Charity, Oliver, Annie and Broadway Nights to name a few!

Margaret Crook - Calamity Jane 1973
Pirate of Penzance - 1990

In 2015 with our production of Pirates of Penzance we won the NODA Allan Brooking award for best G&S production in the South West Region. We returned to Tavistock Town Hall in 2018 for our very colourful production of The King & I for which we were nominated for the NODA Haselmere Award for Visual Excellence.

Susie McLoughlin - The Slipper and The Rose
Julian Bennett and Betthany Ellis

2019 saw us revisiting Austria for the ever popular musical of The Sound of Music, we performed to near capacity audiences.

In 2021, we performed ‘All Together Now’ (a revue provided by MTI). This was designed to ‘kick start’ amateur local theatre after the devastaing effects of the Covid 19 pandemic in 2020.

Den Jackman - Fagin

In 2022 we were delighted to have secured the rights to be the First Amateur Company in the South West to perform… Elf The Musical, it exceeded all our expectations. And 2023 will see us performing the magical new Julian Fellows version of The Wind in the Willows – poop, poop!

At our core, we are an inclusive company that embraces individuals of all ages, whether their passion lies in singing, acting, dancing, or working behind the scenes. We take pride in creating a welcoming environment where everyone can discover their talents and contribute to the extraordinary productions we bring to life. Join us on this incredible journey as we continue to support our local community and reignite the magic of live theatre. We can’t wait to share the stage with you!
